Definition of the word onion dome

The term "onion dome" originated from the Russian word "lukoyablik" which translates to "onion-shaped object" in English. This word was coined to describe the distinctive shape of the domes found on some traditional Russian Orthodox and Eastern Orthodox churches. The onion dome, also known as a bulbous, drum-shaped dome, is made up of a series of concentric circles or cylinders, similar to the layers of an onion. This design not only gives the structures their distinctive visual appearance but also serves a functional purpose. The layered structure strengthens the dome's ability to resist wind and snowfall, making it a common feature in colder climates. The St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, one of the most famous examples of this architectural style, has nine onion-shaped domes, each representing a sacred number in Eastern Orthodox Christian beliefs.
