The term "operating theatre" originated in the mid-19th century as a result of significant advancements in surgery and hygiene practices. Prior to this time, surgeries were typically performed in makeshift locations such as kitchens, dining rooms, or even the patient's home. These environments compromised both the safety and cleanliness of the operations. In the 1860s, British surgeon Joseph Lister pioneered the concept of antiseptic surgery, which emphasized the crucial role of cleanliness and sterilization to prevent infections during surgeries.
