Origin of the word osmosis

The word "osmosis" has its roots in ancient Greece. The Greek physician Hippocrates (460-370 BCE) coined the term "osmos" (ὄσμος), which means " INFLOW" or "FLOW INTO". This term referred to the process of fluids flowing into cells through the cell membrane. The term "osmosis" was later introduced by French scientists Henri Dutrochet and Matthias Schleiden in the 19th century. They used the Greek term "osmos" to describe the movement of water molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration through a semi-permeable membrane.
