Definition of the word padlock

The word "padlock" originated in the late 16th century from the French phrase "battre le bouchon," meaning "to hammer the plug." The French used this phrase to describe a type of lock made by hammering a wooden plug into a shackle and securing it with a metal band. These locks were commonly used in France and were known as "bouchons," which is where the English word "buit," meaning "plug," comes from. As trade between England and France increased, English merchants also began using these locks to secure their ship's hatches and storage rooms. They called these locks "padlocks," derived from the French "pate-verrou," meaning "plate lock." The name "padlock" stuck, and the term became popular in English during the 19th century when mass-produced padlocks began to be manufactured.
