The word "penny" originated from the Proto-Germanic term "*penningaz", which was derived from the Proto-Indo-European root "*pen-" meaning "to pay" or "to punish". This root is also related to the Latin word "pondus", meaning "weight", and the Greek word "ponos", meaning "toil" or "payment". In Old English, the word "penny" referred to a silver coin worth one-twentieth of a pound or pound sterling. This coin was minted for the first time by King Offa of Mercia in the 8th century and was known as the "penny" or "pennig".
