The term "phone box" refers to a traditional telephone booth, commonly found in public places like streets, squares, and stations. The term originated in the early 20th century as telephone services began to expand outside the confines of private homes and offices. The first publicly available telephone services were installed in the United States in the late 1800s, but it wasn't until the 1920s that public telephones became a widespread phenomenon. These first public phones were typically large and heavy cabinets containing multiple phones that were shared by several subscribers. In the 1920s and 1930s, the design of public telephones began to change as new materials and technologies emerged. Corrugated metal replaced the heavy cabinet design to reduce weight and save costs. The first external subscriber lines were installed, allowing people to dial directly from the phone box rather than relying on an operator. The early phone boxes were often located inside buildings, but outdoor phone boxes began to appear in urban areas in the 1930s, providing an alternative for people who couldn't afford to have a telephone installed in their homes.
