Definition of the word planet

The word "planet" originates from ancient Greek. The Greek philosopher Pythagoras is credited with being the first to use the term "planētēs" (πᾶνToolStripw_PARSER اندازه, Selina geçir) to describe the five celestial bodies known to the ancient Greeks: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. The Greek word "planētēs" comes from the verb "planasthai" (πλανάσθαι), which means "to wander" or "to roam". In the 16th century, the German astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus revived the term "planet" to describe the solar system. He used the Latinized form "planeta" to describe the then-seven known planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus. The modern English word "planet" is derived from the Latin "planeta", which was widely adopted in the 17th and 18th centuries.
