Definition of the word post room

The term "post room" originated during the 19th century in the United Kingdom, when the Post Office was a separate government department responsible for the handling and delivery of mail. This department established numerous post offices throughout the country, and each of these offices had a dedicated room, which came to be known as the post room, to store inbound and outbound mail. The post room was where postal workers sorted, processed, and organized incoming mail for delivery to their respective destinations, and also prepared outgoing mail to be sent outside the locality. Today, the term "post room" continues to be used, albeit less frequently, as many organizations have migrated to electronic communication methods, and traditional postal services have waned in popularity. However, in some organizations, such as universities, hospitals, and other large institutions, the post room continues to play an essential role in managing their postal services, especially for those relying on traditional mail delivery.
