Definition of the word potting compost

The term "potting compost" originated in the early 20th century as a result of the growth of the horticulture industry. At the time, houseplants were becoming increasingly popular as indoor decor, and people began to realize that soil from outdoor gardens was not ideal for potting these plants. The soil from outdoor gardens contained varying amounts and types of organic matter, making it too heavy and compact for use in potted plants. The term "potting compost" has since become a common term in the horticultural industry, and is widely used by gardeners and nursery workers to refer to this specialized soil mixture.
