Definition of the word pull down

The phrase "pull down" originally stems from the use of movable shutters or panels to cover windows in ancient buildings. These shutters, also known as "shutter-boards," were installed to provide privacy and protection from the elements. In order to open and close them, a simple mechanism was created to attach them to the frame of the window. This mechanism involved a series of pulleys, ropes, and weights that allowed one person to easily and effortlessly move the shutter up and down, a process that became known as "pulling down" or "lowering" the shutter. Today, the term "pull down" has extends its use beyond just shutters, but is commonly associated with similar mechanisms used to open and close items like window blinds, projector screens, and kitchen faucets.
