Definition of the word riot police

The term "riot police" first emerged in the United States during the 1960s, as a result of the widespread protests and civil unrest that took place in many urban centers during that decade. As peaceful demonstrations frequently turned violent, law enforcement agencies developed specialized units to respond to these situations. The first widely-used term for these units was "special patrol" or "spook squad," but as protests escalated and became more chaotic, the term "riot police" was coined. This new label was intended to convey the idea that these officers had been trained and equipped to deal with large-scale disturbances and to restore order in the face of violent unrest. The term "riot police" has since become a common designation for police forces around the world, as the phenomenon of mass protests and civil unrest has not only persisted but also grown more sophisticated and organized in recent years. In many countries, these units are trained to use a variety of tactics to disperse crowds, including the use of tear gas, batons, and other non-lethal weapons, as well as more extreme measures like the use of rubber bullets, water cannons, and flash-bang grenades. Despite the use of these techniques, however, the deployment of riot police has not always been effective in managing conflicts peacefully. In many cases, these units have been accused of excessive force, as well as human rights abuses, leading to calls for reform and greater accountability in law enforcement practices around the world.
