Definition of the word scatterbrain

The term "scatterbrain" has its roots in the English language, dating back to the 16th century. At that time, "brain" was used more specifically to refer to the mind, rather than the physical organ inside the skull. The word "scatter" originally meant to throw or disperse, typically in a careless or haphazard manner. In the letter, Wyatt alludes to the fact that his daughter's fiancé has questioned her mental faculties, describing him as a man who "calleth [my daughter] a scatterbrain".
