Origin of the word serotonin

The word "serotonin" was coined in the 1940s by American biochemist Frederick G. Sulzman. At the time, Sulzman was working at the Institute of Physiology at Baylor University in Houston, Texas. He was studying the chemistry of the gut and discovered a new compound that was present in the enterochromaffin cells of the gut lining. The compound was a vasoconstrictor, meaning it caused blood vessels to constrict or narrow. Sulzman named the compound "serotonin" because it was released from the enterochromaffin cells, and the suffix "-in" was added, similar to other hormone names like adrenaline or insulin. The word "serotonin" was officially coined in 1948 and has since become widely used in the scientific community to describe this important neurotransmitter.
