Definition of the word Shirley Temple

(1928-2014) the most famous and popular child star in the history of movies. She was known for the curls in her hair and the dimples (= hollow places) in her cheeks. Her many films, in which she also danced and sang, included Curly Top (1935), Heidi (1937) and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1938). She was later, under her married name of Shirley Temple Black, an active Republican politician. She was appointed as a US representative to the United Nations (1969) and as ambassador to Ghana (1974-6) and Czechoslovakia (1989-92).

a US drink that contains no alcohol but looks like a cocktail (= mixed alcoholic drink). It is usually made with lemon juice and grenadine (= a thick sweet red liquid made from fruit juice). Ice is added and often a cherry on top. It is popular with children and was named after the former child actor Shirley Temple.
