Definition of the word shoal

The word "shoal" originated from the Old Norse word "skjöl," meaning a shallow place in a body of water where boats and ships can run aground. The term was adopted by the Old English language, spelled "scēol," and developed its meaning as a group or school of fish swimming together in a shallow area. The word's modern pronunciation and spelling (with one "l") have been influenced by Middle English and Old French, which changed the word's phonetics and orthography. During the 14th century, scēol evolved into shel or schele, which was eventually replaced by shoal in the 15th century. The use of the term "shoal" in reference to fish still persists in modern English, as well as in some other languages, such as Dutch and German.
