The term "shoulder pad" refers to the padded inserts sewn into the shoulder region of a garment, typically found in clothing items such as blazers or jackets. The origin of this term can be traced back to the fashion industry of the 1980s, where shoulder pads became a popular trend in womenswear. The padded shoulders were designed to create a broad, powerful silhouette, inspired by the bold fashion aesthetic of the time known as "power dressing." The term "shoulder pad," however, gained popularity as the padding itself became more widespread and recognizable in fashion. The initial pad-like structures were stuffed with polyester, made to widen and square off the shoulder line, creating a defined and structured frame, steeped in a masculine aesthetic. Today, the trend has taken a less drastic turn, with slimmer padding used mainly to accentuate size and provide comfort in clothing that requires structured shoulders.
