Definition of the word singularity

The term "singularity" originally refers to a point in a mathematical function where the value becomes infinite or undefined. It can also refer to a point in space-time where the laws of physics as we know them break down, such as the center of a black hole. It was popularized in the context of futurism by mathematician and computer scientist John von Neumann and science fiction author Vernor Vinge, who suggested that technological advances may lead to a point where intelligence and technology merge and transcend traditional understanding, creating a new form of existence that is difficult or impossible to predict or comprehend. In both mathematical and futurist contexts, the concept of a singularity suggests a drastic or revolutionary change in a previously stable or predictable system.
