Origin of the word slinky

The word "slinky" wasn't created out of thin air! It was actually invented by its creator, Richard James, in 1945. James, a naval engineer, was working with springs when he accidentally knocked one off a shelf. He watched in fascination as it "slinked" across the floor, and the name stuck! While he originally considered names like "coily" and "spring-a-ding," "slinky" perfectly captured the toy's unique movement and became a household name.
