What is smokeless? How to use in English

Definition & pronunciation of smokeless

smokelessadjective

không khói

/ˈsməʊkləs//ˈsməʊkləs/

Where does the word smokeless come from?

The word "smokeless" initially emerged in the context of the steelmaking process in the late 19th century. Traditional steelmaking involved baking iron ore in blast furnaces, a process that was heavily polluting due to the high levels of smoke and fumes released into the air. In response, British engineer Sidney Gilchrist Thomas developed the Thomas process, a method of steelmaking that significantly reduced emissions by eliminating the need for coking (heating coal to drive off impurities) in favor of using a catalyst to break down the iron ore. This new method, which resulted in a smokeless steel, was patented in 1878 and opened the way for more efficient and environmentally friendly steel production. Since then, the word "smokeless" has come to be associated with products and processes that produce minimal or no smoke or other airborne pollutants. This can range from smokeless coal, which burns more cleanly than traditional coal, to smokeless gunpowder, which is less likely to leave a smoky residue during firing. The use of smokeless fuel sources has become increasingly important in recent years as concerns over air pollution and climate change have grown, driving a demand for cleaner, more sustainable products and practices.
