Definition of the word snake pit

The expression "snake pit" refers to a place where there are a large number of venomous snakes. The term originated in the early 1900s in psychiatric institutions where patients who were deemed mentally ill and excessively violent were isolated in padded rooms, which were sometimes referred to as "snake pits." These rooms were controlled environments which aimed to protect other patients and staff from the violent outbursts of these individuals. The term "snake pit" became a metaphor for a chaotic or challenging situation, a place where one might find danger or conflict that needs to be carefully navigated. The expression has since been used figuratively to describe any situation that is unpredictable, dangerous, or difficult to manage, regardless of whether actual snakes are present.
