Definition of the word soft soap

The term "soft soap" originally referred to a type of mild, vegetable-based cleaning agent that was popular during the 1800s. This soap was made using natural ingredients like coconut oil, castor oil, and lye, which were less harsh on the skin and gentler than traditional soaps made with animal fats. The term "soft soap" came about as a contrast to the harsh, abrasive soaps made with lye and animal fats that were commonly used at the time, which were often referred to as "hard soaps." These "hard soaps" were often made using a process known as "cast" soapmaking, which resulted in a denser, harder bar of soap. As the name suggests, "soft soaps" were softer and more pliable than "hard soaps," and they were often sold in bars that were wrapped in paper or wax paper. They were also commonly used as a cleansing agent for delicate fabrics, such as silk and lace, as they were less likely to damage or discolor these materials than traditional harsh soaps. Today, the term "soft soap" is still used to refer to mild, gentle cleansing agents, although the traditional vegetable-based soaps have largely been replaced by more modern, synthetic alternatives.
