Definition of the word stun gun

The term "stun gun" is a relatively new term associated with a type of self-defense device. It originated in the 1970s when a disturbing trend emerged in the United States as convicted criminals began to learn judo and karate to resist and overpower law enforcement officers (LEOs). In response, law enforcement agencies sought out alternative methods for controlling suspects that were less physically demanding than traditional methods like subduing them with nightsticks. A Dutch company named Tomar introduced the first stun gun in 1974, called the "Thomas Gun," which was significantly more controlled and efficient at stunning intruders than conventional methods. The device delivered an electric shock via electrodes attached to two small metal probes and immediately rendered the target immobile, making them easier to subdue. The term "stun gun" was coined to describe this new type of device because unlike a conventional handgun that is deadly, a stun gun would only temporarily incapacitate a target. Because stun guns temporarily incapacitate an attacker rather than causing permanent harm, law enforcement agencies worldwide have adopted them for self-defense, with many officers preferring them over traditional methods. Today, self-defense products such as TASER International's TASER devices, are also commonly referred to as "stun guns," though the term is only a portion of their broader product line.
