The term "takedown" originally referred to the act of wrestling or grappling an opponent to the ground in various forms of martial arts and combat sports such as judo, jiu-jitsu, and freestyle wrestling. In the context of computer networks, "takedown" takes on a new meaning. In the early 2000s, as the digital world became increasingly interconnected and cybercrime began to pose a growing threat, law enforcement agencies and internet service providers (ISPs) launched a new strategy to combat online criminal activity.
