Definition of the word technical drawing

The term "technical drawing" originated during the Industrial Revolution when engineers and architects needed a precise and systematic way to communicate complex design ideas to manufacturers. Previously, designs were often communicated through rough sketches or textual descriptions, which resulted in errors, misunderstandings, and delays in production. To overcome this problem, a standardized system of technical drawing was developed, which consisted of geometric symbols, dimensions, and material properties requiring precision and accuracy to ensure that the design could be efficiently reproduced. The first documented use of the term "technical drawing" is attributed to American architect John Hubert Robinson, who coined the term in his 1873 book "Applied Mechanics". Since then, the concept of technical drawing has evolved to encompass computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D modeling software, which have revolutionized the design and construction process by improving efficiency, accuracy, and collaboration throughout the project life cycle.
