Definition of the word theology

The word "theology" derives from two Greek roots: "theos," meaning "God," and "logos," which means "study" or "reason." Accordingly, theology refers to the academic and spiritual discipline devoted to understanding the nature of God, religious beliefs, and divine revelation through critical thought, religious doctrine, and scripture. Originating in ancient Greece, the term "theology" first appeared in the second century AD, used by the early Christian father, Origen, to describe the study of God and divinity, previously referred to as "sacred doctrine." Today, theological study remains a vital part of Christian, Jewish, Islamic, and other religious traditions, often serving as a foundation for religious teaching, leadership, and faith.
