Definition of the word therapist

The word "therapist" comes from the Greek words "therapeia" (therapy) and "iatros" (physician). The term was first used in the early 20th century to describe a healthcare professional who applies various techniques to help patients alleviate suffering, achieve recovery, or improve their overall well-being. In the 1920s, American psychologist and physician William Alanson White popularized the term "therapist" to distinguish between medical doctors (doctors) and those who practice psychological or mental health treatment. White believed that the term "therapist" conveyed a sense of expertise and compassion, emphasizing the therapist's role as an expert in the healing process. Since then, the term "therapist" has been broadly adopted to describe professionals who practice psychotherapy, counseling, or other forms of talk-based therapy, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, counselors, and others.
