Definition of the word time zone

The concept of time zones first emerged in the mid-19th century, as businesses and transportation networks spanned larger geographic areas. George Hudson, a British railway company manager, suggested a standardization of time to synchronize railway schedules across different locations. This idea spread to other industries and soon became a practical necessity for communication and transportation. The term "time zone" was coined in 1894 by Sir Sandford Fleming, a Canadian engineer and inventor. Fleming proposed dividing the world into 24 standard time zones, each spanning 15 degrees of longitude, as a way to facilitate timekeeping on a global scale. The first international conference on standard time was held in Washington D.C. In 1884, where delegates agreed to implement the system proposed by Fleming. Since then, time zones have undergone various adjustments and improvements to accommodate changing circumstances and technologies. Today, there are over 70 time zones in use worldwide, as different areas choose to either stick to the standard definition or establish their own due to cultural or practical reasons. Nonetheless, the concept of time zones remains an integral component of modern society, aiding in the organization and coordination of various aspects of everyday life.
