Origin of the word unit trust

The concept of unit trusts (or investment trusts, as they are called in some countries) was first proposed by Ian Hamilton in his book "Money's Worth," published in 1937. Hamilton saw an opportunity to provide ordinary investors with the same level of investment opportunities and expertise as wealthy individuals, who typically invested in privately-held companies. The first unit trust was launched in the UK by Fidelity in 1961, and it was called Fidelity Management Trust. The success of this product led to a surge in popularity, and dozens more unit trusts were launched in the following years. Today, unit trusts are still common investment products in the UK and other countries with a strong tradition in the Commonwealth, such as New Zealand and Australia. The popularity of unit trusts has decreased in recent years, however, due to the emergence of alternative investment products, such as exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and mutual funds.
