Definition of the word virginal

The origin of the word "virginal" can be traced back to the Middle English word "vyrgynale," which came from the Old French word "virginale." This Old French term, in turn, was derived from the Latin prefix "virgo-" (meaning "maid" or "virgin") combined with the suffix "-al-" (meaning "pertaining to" or "belonging to"). In its earliest usage, "virginal" was used to describe a musical instrument that was associated with virginity or purity. This instrument, known as the virginal, was a medieval and Renaissance keyboard instrument that resembled a small harpsichord. It was often decorated with images or symbols of virginity, such as lilies or doves, and was popularly played by women who were invested with these qualities.
