Definition of the word walk over

The phrase "walk over" originally referred to excavating a route by walking over ground, which made it easier to construct a structure or a road on that site. This meaning is still evident in expressions such as "walking the site" or "walking the ground." However, the contemporary use of "walk over" as a metaphor for easily defeating an opponent or completing a task with little effort can be traced back to the 1930s. During this time, the term "walk-over" was used in horse racing to describe a contest where one horse had such an overwhelming advantage that the other riders chose not to participate, effectively awarding the win to the superior horse without a challenge. This analogy was then extended to other contexts, where the phrase "walk over" carries a sense of dominance and superiority over one's competition.
