Definition of the word weather station

The term "weather station" can be traced back to the early 19th century when scientists began researching and collecting meteorological data to better understand the Earth's atmosphere. Originally, weather observations were conducted at various open spaces, such as public gardens or hilltops, and recorded in a logbook by a designated observer, known as a "weatherman." These places were called "weather stations." In 1852, the British Meteorological Society, now known as the Met Office, established the first official weather station in Birmingham, England. This was followed by the establishment of further weather stations across the UK, driven by the desire to densify meteorological data and heighten the accuracy of weather forecasting. As weather monitoring technology advanced, so too did weather monitoring infrastructure; today's weather stations typically consist of automated sensors, data loggers, and communication devices that can transmit real-time meteorological data to central processing facilities for further analysis and forecasting. Consequently, "weather station" now refers to any location equipped with this advanced technology used to monitor and record weather conditions, from localized weather sensors installed in urban areas, to remote weather monitoring stations situated in rural or wilderness environments.
