Definition of the word wicker

The word "wicker" originally referred to a type of lattice-like structure made out of interwoven twigs, branches, and other plant materials, typically willow. This structure was commonly used to create cages or containers, such as baskets, chairs, or frames for holding offerings in European folk traditions. The term "wicker man" began to emerge in England during the 18th century, describing a wooden effigy filled with flammable materials and ignited as part of midsummer festivities. The figure was often formed in the shape of a man or animal, tied and bound, and sometimes decorated with wicker or other materials. The word "wiccan" and "witchcraft" are also tied to this tradition, as early versions of the belief systems involving the worship of nature spirits and the use of magic occasionally incorporated wicker materials in their ceremonies. While the practice of creating and burning effigies in this manner fell out of favor due to the influence of Christianity, references to wicker men continue to appear in popular culture and literature, evoking symbols of paganism, superstition, and horror.
