Definition of the word wide receiver

The term "wide receiver" in football originated in the early 1900s, as the sport was still in its infancy. Back then, football was a very different game, with fewer rules and much less emphasis on passing the ball. The original form of football was known as "rugby football," which allowed tackling above the waist and scrummaging for the ball. This made reversing the direction of play extremely challenging, as a team could be stalemated if caught in its own territory. In 1892, in an effort to create a more fluid and free-flowing game, Walter Camp, a prominent football figure, introduced new rules that banned rugby's most dangerous features, such as tackling above the waist and kicking the ball, among others.
