Definition of the word wild silk

The term "wild silk" refers to silk produced by certain species of wild moths and caterpillars that are not traditionally farmed for their silk. Unlike the silk produced by domesticated silkworms, which is typically white and smooth, wild silk can come in a variety of colors and textures, ranging from golden brown to reddish-brown to gray, and sometimes even blue or green. The process of collecting wild silk is much more difficult and risky than farming domesticated silkworms. Wild moths and caterpillars are typically found in forests, and their life cycles and behaviors are less well understood than those of domesticated silkworms, which makes it harder to predict when and where they will spin their cocoons. Moreover, wild silk cocoons are often hidden in crevices and other hard-to-reach places, making them more difficult to find and harvest than the easily harvested silk cocoons of domesticated silkworms.
