Origin of the word wing mirror

The term "wing mirror" is commonly used to refer to the exterior side mirrors found on vehicles. The etymology of the word can be traced back to the mirrors' shape, which resembles that of an aeroplane wing. In the early stages of automobiles, cars didn't have external mirrors as Windscreen or BMW Motors AG's designer, Saverio Meuser, introduced the side-view mirror in 1911. The first so-called wing mirrors, however, were introduced in the 1930s by two Japanese motorcar manufacturers, Nissan and Prince (later known as Nissan Motor Company and Isuzu Motors Limited, respectively). The word "wing" in wing mirror hints that the mirror appears attached to the side of the car and covers the space between the window and doors. Over time, wing mirrors have undergone several advancements and modifications, from mechanical to electric, and are now an essential safety feature on most modern vehicles.
