Definition of the word wushu

The word "wushu" () is of Chinese origin. It was coined in the 1950s as part of China's cultural revival during the Communist Party's efforts to promote traditional Chinese culture. The term is a combination of two Chinese characters: "wu" () meaning "martial" or "military," and "shu" () meaning "art" or "skill." Initially, wushu referred to traditional Chinese martial arts, such as kung fu, tai chi, and qigong. However, in the 1950s, the Chinese government created a reformed, more athletic version of wushu that emphasized acrobatics, tumbling, and aerial movements. This new style of wushu became a competitive sport in China and eventually gained international recognition. Today, wushu is practiced worldwide and is recognized as an official sport by the International Olympic Committee. Despite its evolution, the name "wushu" remains rooted in Chinese martial arts tradition.
