Origin of the word apatosaurus

The dinosaur species Apatosaurus, formerly known as Brontosaurus, got its name from a Greek word meaning "deceptive lizard" or "deceptive reptile" (apatos), and the Greek word for lizard or dragon (saurus). The reason for this misleading name stems from a misunderstanding in the late 1800s. In 1877, a team led by Othniel Charles Marsh dubbed the discoveries of a large-bodied, long-necked herbivore Apatosaurus, which translates to "deceptive lizard" in Greek. Marsh named this species based on the false belief that the fossils he found were actually those of the Brontosaurus, a dinosaur that had already been given a Latin name by British paleontologist Richard Owen. Incorrectly, Marsh thought that the fossils he had found didn't match the description of Brontosaurus, leading him to give them a new name. Years later though, experts determined that what Marsh called Apatosaurus was, in fact, another species of Brontosaurus, known more commonly as Brontosaurus columbus. To avoid further confusion, in 1905, scientists conceded that the original Brontosaurus named by Owen was different from the Apatosaurus named by Marsh, and Marsh's find was considered a separate, distinct species, which still retained its name, Apatosaurus ajax. The scientific name Apatosaurus had stuck, making it the name by which this dinosaur is still known today.
