Definition of the word break away

The phrase "break away" literally refers to the act of a person or object separating or breaking free from a larger mass or group. In sports, specifically in field hockey and ice hockey, the term "breakaway" is used when a player gains control of the puck or ball, moves past the defense unopposed, and has a clear shot at the opposing team's goal. The origin of the term "breakaway" can be traced back to the 1930s in the context of field hockey. At the time, the sport's rules allowed players to carry the ball with them instead of hitting it with a stick. This led to more opportunities for solo runs, which came to be known as "breakaways."
