Definition of the word caucus

The word "caucus" originates from the Algonquian language, spoken by Native American tribes in North America. In the 17th century, the Algonquian tribe of Massachusetts used the word "caucuses" to describe a council or gathering of tribe members to discuss tribal matters. The word was later adopted by European colonizers and was used to describe a private meeting or conversation, often of a secretive nature. In American politics, the term gained popularity in the 19th century to describe informal meetings of politicians and party members to discuss issues and elect party leaders. Today, a caucus is typically a gathering of voters within a political party to discuss and decide on candidates and platform issues. Despite its origins in Native American language, the modern concept of a caucus is inherently Western and political in nature.
