Definition of the word conk

The word "conk" has a few different meanings in various contexts, but its use as a derogatory term for African Americans can be traced back to the late 19th century. In this context, "conk" refers to a hairstyle popular among black men at the time, which involved straightening their hair with lye or other chemicals. The term "conk" came from the Dutch word "kenniek," which means "keratin," or the protein found in animal and human hair. African Americans adapted the term "conk" to describe the straightening process and the hairstyle that resulted from it. The straightening process was known as "getting a conk" or simply "conking." This process was often done at home with lye, a caustic substance that could cause burns and other serious health problems. Nevertheless, many black men found that straightening their hair made them look more respectable and professional, which was increasingly important in increasingly segregated white- collar jobs. Despite its origins as a positive term, "conk" soon acquired a negative connotation as it became associated with light skin and the desire to appear more white. The term "conked out" came to mean someone who had lost interest or energy, as if their hair (which was a source of pride and identity) had lost its shape or luster. Eventually, the term "conk" came to be seen as a derogatory term for African Americans, particularly those who attempted to blend in with white society through their appearance.
