Origin of the word corm

The word "corm" is derived from the Old English word "corn," which means "grain." In the case of corms, this term is misleading as a corm is not a grain at all. Instead, a corm is a specialized bulb-like structure that some types of plants, such as gladiolus, crocus, and iris, use as a storage organ for nutrients. The confusion around the use of the word "corm" arises from historical times when the original meaning of "corn" as a noun referring to the seed of a cereal grain was still in use. The plant bulbs that we now call corms were harvested and dried, similar to the way traditional farmers would harvest and dry grains like corn or wheat. It was, therefore, natural to mistake the corms for grains and refer to them using the same word. In the 1750s, the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus, who is known as the father of modern taxonomy, classified these bulbs as "corn" in his publication Systema Naturae. This classification stuck, and although it is now apparent that the use of the term "corn" for these bulbs is incorrect, the tradition persists.
