Wealthy families began to build enclosed chambers, commonly called "withdrawing rooms," where they could enjoy more intimate meals in smaller groups. These rooms were often richly decorated with fine furnishings, textiles, and decorative arts, reflecting the new cultural value placed on privacy and refinement. As the practice of having separate dining spaces became more widespread among the upper classes, the term "dining room" gradually replaced the older term "withdrawing room" to more accurately describe these dedicated areas for meals. The word "dining" comes from the Old French "dinner," meaning "a light supper," and has come to describe a meal other than breakfast or lunch. Today, the term "dining room" is commonly used to describe one's primary eating area, although in some households, particularly those with formal entertaining traditions, separate rooms may still be dedicated to specific meals, such as breakfast rooms or morning rooms.
