Definition of the word dressing room

The term "dressing room" originally derived from the positioning of a performer's clothing storage area within a theater production. In the 17th and 18th centuries, actors' costumes were stored and changed behind a stage curtain known as a "dressing" or "getting dressed." As the complexity of productions increased, larger dressing areas were constructed for performers to prepare and change into their costume and makeup ahead of their performances. The term "dressing room" thus became associated with this private space and continues to be used today not just in theatrical productions but also in various venues such as fashion shows, cinemas, and sports stadiums where performers need to change or prepare before entering the main stage.
