Origin of the word endocrine

The word "endocrine" originates from the Greek words "endon," meaning "within," and "krinesthai," meaning "to separate" or "to secrete." It was first coined in the late 19th century by French physiologist Eugène-Henri Naville to describe glands that secrete hormones into the bloodstream. At the time, it was believed that these glands, such as the pancreas and thyroid, produced substances that were secreted into the circulatory system and then exerted their effects elsewhere in the body. The term "endocrine" was thus used to distinguish these glands from those that secreted substances outside the bloodstream, such as exocrine glands like the salivary glands.
