Definition of the word extreme sport

The term "extreme sport" emerged in the late 20th century to describe a new category of athletic endeavors that challenged traditional limits and pushed physical and mental boundaries. The exact origins of the phrase are unclear, but some scholars trace it back to the mid-1980s when surfer and waterman Laird Hamilton coined the term "extreme aquatics" to describe his dangerous, and at the time, unconventional big-wave surfing techniques. The popularization of extreme sports can be attributed to several factors. The rise of global media networks, social media, and the advent of high-definition cameras in the 90s allowed extreme sports to gain mainstream recognition. They were featured in popular sports TV shows, and national and international events began to be organized. Additionally, advances in equipment technology, such as lighter and stronger materials for skis, boards, and bikes, allowed athletes to pursue more dangerous and adrenaline-fueled feats. The word "extreme" connotes excitement, danger, and high-stakes risk-taking. It suggests that these activities go beyond the usual, everyday pursuits and entail a level of challenge and difficulty that is not for everyone. These sports are often done individually rather than as part of a team, allowing for greater personal risk-taking and rewards. However, the term "extreme" also sometimes provokes criticism and debate. Critics argue that the label can perpetuate a "hypermasculine" image, often assumed by men, that can serve to exclude other genders from participating in these sports.
