Definition of the word fire screen

The term "fire screen" refers to a decorative object placed in front of a fireplace to prevent sparks, ashes, and embers from flying out and causing damage or fire hazards. The idea of using screens to protect against flames is not a new concept. The earliest form of fire screens dates back to the ancient Mesopotamians, who used woven reed baskets to guard their hearths. In medieval Europe, elaborate metal screens decorated with intricate designs, known as andirons, were placed in front of the fire to shield the walls from the intense heat. During the 17th century, stoves became popular, and fire screens were designed to fit around them, becoming a fashionable feature in homes.
