Definition of the word fixture

The word "fixture" has its roots in the Old French word "fixiere," which means "fastener" or "fastening." This word, in turn, is derived from the Latin word "figuere," which translates to "fasten" or "secure." The concept of a "fixture" evolved during the Middle Ages when people used fasteners, such as nails or pegs, to attach objects to walls or furniture. These objects, like chandeliers or cupboards, came to be known as "fixtures" because they were "fixed" or permanently attached to a specific location. In legal terms, a "fixture" refers to an object that is permanently attached to a building or piece of land, making it an integral part of the property. This concept came to be recognized in England during the 17th century, as landowners sought clarification on whether objects like built-in firesides or ornate moldings were considered part of the dwelling and, therefore, belonged to the property or to the tenant. Since then, the term has been used to describe a variety of items, from machinery to equipment, that are installed or attached in a permanent manner.
