Origin of the word freehold

The term "freehold" has its roots in medieval English law. During the 12th century, the Crown and the nobility held most of the land in England. The peasants and commoners, on the other hand, held land through a feudal system, where they paid rent and homage to their lords in exchange for the right to work the land. In the 13th century, the Assize of Arms (1242) allowed for the creation of "freeholders" or "freemen," who were granted land by their lords without any feudal obligations. These landholders were considered free because they were not bound to the land through feudal service or rent. They could sell, inherit, or pass down the land as they wished, and were not subject to the arbitrary decisions of their lords. The term "freehold" comes from the Old English words "freo" meaning "free" and "hold" meaning "land" or "possession." Today, a freehold property is one where the owner has full ownership and possession of the land and any buildings on it, without any restrictions or obligations to a third party.
