Gimcrack
The origin of the word "gimcrack" is traced back to the late 17th century in England. At the time, a man named Edward Lloyd operated a coffeehouse and bookshop in London called "Lloyd's Coffee House." It was a popular meeting place for writers, journalists, and politicians, and Lloyd sold various goods as well, including printed broadsheets that would later become known as "Lloyd's Papers." In his shop, Lloyd sold a variety of items, including hand-cranked devices called "quizzing glasses" or "mineral waters" which were used to view and analyze paintings or describe the properties of rocks and minerals, respectively. These devices were constructed with brass frames and lenses of varying magnifications, and were often advertised by street vendors or peddlers as "Lloyd's new invention." Eventually, the word "gimcrack" was coined to describe these items, which became known for their cheap quality and short-lived usefulness. The term "gimcrack" is derived from "gimme," a 17th-century British slang word for "give me," as the items sold by Lloyd's vendors were often said to be demanded with the phrase, "gimme a glass." Over time, the meaning of the term "gimcrack" expanded to include any cheaply made, ornamental object, designed to be sold as a novelty or trinket. Today, the word is used to describe any trivial or worthless item, usually intended for show or amusement rather than practical use.
