Definition of the word haiku

The word "haiku" originated from Japan and refers to a poetic form that has gained popularity worldwide in recent centuries. It's considered the shortest form of Japanese poetry and is characterized by its simplicity, brevity, and a focus on nature. The origins of haiku can be traced back to the 13th century, during the Kamakura period in Japan. At that time, poets would write short, syllabled verses to accompany Zen Buddhist folios of artwork, known as scroll paintings. These poems, known as hokku, were designed to serve as an introduction to the images and reflected a momentary observation of the natural world. Over time, these hokku poems transformed into haiku, with the characteristic three-lined, 17-syllable structure modern haiku are known for today. The development of haiku as a unique poetic form is attributed to the 13th-century poet Yosa Buson. During the Edo period (1603-1868), haiku gained greater popularity in Japanese literary circles, and over time, it has spread globally as a poetic form that celebrates the beauty of the natural world and captures the essence of a moment in time.
